OCCUPATIONAL DISABILITY
Occupationally disabled; now what?
People who become occupationally disabled often have their life change entirely. Becoming occupationally disabled can happen over the course of many years, where you constantly overexert yourself or grow increasingly ill. It could also occur in a single instant, due to an accident or acute illness. In any case, it will have far-reaching consequences.
Your income and occupational disability
If you are an employee, your employer will continue to pay much of your salary for the first two years. When you are nearing the end of this period, you will have to apply for WIA benefits under the Work and Income (Capacity for Work) Act from UWV WERKbedrijf, the work placement branch of the Employee Insurance Agency (UWV). UWV WERKbedrijf will assess whether you are occupationally disabled in full or in part. The amount of benefits that you receive depends on this assessment.
Additional security
Generally speaking, occupational disability will cause your income to drop significantly. This change could lead to problems in paying your monthly obligations such as the rent or mortgage payments. Of course, this situation is something that you hope to avoid. One solution is insurance that compensates your loss of income due to occupational disability (or unemployment). We are happy to tell you more about this option.
